Our verdict

Plane is for teams that want Jira-style work items, cycles and views and the option to self-host. Skip it if you only need a simple card board, or need features the free plan leaves out.

What it does well

  • Source code under GNU AGPL v3, with Docker and Kubernetes self-hosting
  • Board, list, spreadsheet and Gantt views, plus cycles with burndown charts
  • iOS and Android apps work with both Cloud and self-hosted instances

Where it falls short

  • Free cloud plan is limited to 12 users and has no wiki, dashboards or integrations
  • Free plan has no AI credits or AI agents
  • Enterprise Grid plan is marked coming soon
