Our verdict

Good for people who want a hosted image and video generator they can use from a browser or Discord and are happy to pay monthly. Skip it if you need a free plan, private generation on a cheap tier, or software you can run on your own machine.

What it does well

  • Works on midjourney.com and in Discord, with an Editor on the web
  • Standard plan and up include unlimited image generations in Relax mode
  • You own what you make, even after cancelling, with one revenue-based exception

Where it falls short

  • No free plan, and no free trial on the website or in Discord
  • Stealth Mode (private images) is only on the $60 Pro and $120 Mega plans
  • Basic has no Relax mode: 3.3 hours of Fast time a month, then $4/hour

Midjourney generates images and short videos from text prompts. You can create on midjourney.com, where the Create page and an Editor (crop, pan, aspect ratio and Vary Region inpainting) live, or in Discord, which offers most of the same tools. Images can also be used as image prompts, style references or edit-model references on the web.

Every plan is a subscription that renews monthly or yearly. Basic is $10/month, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120; paying yearly takes 20% off ($96, $288, $576 and $1,152 a year). The plans differ in Fast GPU time (3.3, 15, 30 and 60 hours a month), Relax mode, video resolution, concurrent jobs and Stealth Mode. Extra Fast time costs $4/hour on every plan.

Midjourney says you own the images and videos you create, even if you cancel. If your company makes more than $1,000,000 USD a year in gross revenue, you need a Pro or Mega plan. The help center says no free trial is currently available in Discord or on the website; a limited trial exists only in the separate niji journey app.
