Our verdict

Good for people who want a hosted generator with a free weekly allowance and tools for working with text inside images, like logos and posters. Skip it if you need private generation without paying, or want to run models on your own hardware.

What it does well

  • Free plan gives 30 credits a week
  • Has an editor (Studio) with editable text layers, plus masks and inpainting
  • Plus and above keep new images private until you publish them

Where it falls short

  • Free images are public, and free credits need a Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in
  • PNG downloads and upscaling need a paid plan
  • Video and some premium apps need a paid plan or bought credits

Ideogram generates images and videos from text prompts or reference images. The docs cover text-in-image prompting, transparent backgrounds, logos, batch generation, custom model training, and an editor called Studio with layers, masks and inpainting. It runs on the web and has an iOS app; an API with keys and usage reports is also offered.

Pricing is credit based. Free gives 30 credits a week, but only if you sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft; email-and-password accounts get none. Plus is $20/month ($15/month billed yearly) for 2,400 credits a month, Pro is $60 ($42 yearly) for 7,500, and Team is $30 per user ($20 yearly) for 3,600 per user, with a two-user minimum. Monthly credits do not roll over. On Plus, Pro and Team you can keep using Ideogram models in a slower queue after credits run out, though edits, upscales and reference-image generations still need credits. Pay as you go credits are also sold.

On the free plan everything you generate is public. Ideogram's terms say it does not claim ownership of your output or restrict commercial use of it, but it disclaims liability and tells you to check what third-party permissions you may need.
