Our verdict

ONLYOFFICE suits people who want free desktop editors with strong Microsoft Office file support, and teams that want to self-host editing. Skip it if you need Microsoft 365's email, calendar and OneDrive bundle.

What it does well

  • Desktop Editors are free for personal and professional use
  • Opens and edits DOCX, XLSX and PPTX natively, plus ODF files and PDFs
  • Source for Desktop Editors and Docs Community is on GitHub under AGPL-3.0

Where it falls short

  • Self-hosted Enterprise and Developer editions are proprietary, with quote-based pricing
  • Community server edition recommends up to 20 users and has no clustering
  • No email or calendar app in the editors themselves
The ONLYOFFICE website
The official ONLYOFFICE website, 17 October 2026.

ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors cover documents, spreadsheets, presentations, a form creator and PDF editing. The official page says they are free for personal and professional use, work offline, and can connect to cloud services such as ONLYOFFICE, Nextcloud, ownCloud and Dropbox for co-editing. They run on Windows, macOS and Linux, and the site links mobile apps for Android and iOS.

Pricing depends on how you run it. The ONLYOFFICE cloud has a free Startup plan (up to 3 admins, unlimited users and guests, up to 12 rooms, 2 GB storage) and a Business plan at $20 per admin per month with 250 GB per admin, SSO and audit trail. Add-ons are billed monthly, such as extra storage at $0.14 per GB per month. The cloud is free for qualifying nonprofits and schools.

For self-hosting, the Docs Community Edition is AGPL-3.0 and free. Enterprise and Developer editions are proprietary; the Enterprise page describes licensing by simultaneous connections, as a 1-year subscription or a lifetime licence, with 1 or 3 years of updates and support. Exact self-hosted prices were not shown on the pages fetched.
