Our verdict

A good fit for people who already work on GitHub and want one assistant across several editors, with a free tier to try it. Skip it if you want an assistant that is fully self-hosted or whose code never leaves your machine.

What it does well

  • Free plan at $0 with 2,000 inline completions per month
  • Works in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, Xcode and Vim/Neovim
  • Free Copilot Pro access for verified students, teachers and some open source maintainers

Where it falls short

  • Free plan is capped (2,000 completions; chat and agent use limited)
  • Paid usage is metered in GitHub AI Credits, which takes effort to follow
  • Free plan leaves out cloud agent and Copilot code review
The GitHub Copilot website
The official GitHub Copilot website, 16 October 2026.

GitHub Copilot gives inline code suggestions, a chat panel and agent features. It runs in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, Xcode, Azure Data Studio and Vim/Neovim, and also through the Copilot CLI, the GitHub website and GitHub Mobile.

Copilot Free costs $0 and is limited to 2,000 inline completions per month with automatic model selection only. GitHub's pricing page FAQ also states Free users are limited to 50 chat requests (including Copilot Edits). The Free plan does not include the cloud agent, and code review is limited to Review selection in VS Code.

Paid individual plans are Pro at $10 per month, Pro+ at $39 per month and Max at $100 per month. Each includes a monthly allotment of GitHub AI Credits that agent mode, chat, code review, the cloud agent and the CLI draw from. Business is $19 and Enterprise is $39 per granted seat per month on GitHub's docs. Verified students get Copilot Student at no cost, and verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects may be eligible for free Pro.
