Our verdict

Continue was acquired by Cursor, and its open-source code stays freely available but is no longer actively developed. For developers who want an open source assistant in VS Code or JetBrains and are comfortable configuring models themselves. Skip it if you need a maintained product with support, since the main repository is marked read-only.

What it does well

  • Licensed under Apache 2.0 in the official repository
  • Available for VS Code (Marketplace and OpenVSX), JetBrains and as an npm CLI
  • Docs list agent, chat, edit and autocomplete modes

Where it falls short

  • Acquired by Cursor; the code stays free but is no longer developed
  • The GitHub repository says it is no longer actively maintained and is read-only
  • Some docs reference pages are marked Deprecated
The Continue website
The official Continue website, 16 October 2026.

Continue is an open source AI coding agent. The official README describes it as available as a CLI (the @continuedev/cli npm package), a VS Code extension on the Visual Studio Marketplace and OpenVSX, and a JetBrains plugin downloadable from GitHub Releases. The docs list agent mode, chat mode, edit mode, autocomplete and the CLI.

The source is under the Apache License 2.0, with copyright held by Continue Dev, Inc. The README says the 2.0.0 release removed anonymous telemetry and the authentication layer, and it recommends the CLI over the JetBrains plugin.

No price applies to the extension itself. The README also states that the continuedev/continue repository is no longer actively maintained and is read-only for all users. Because the tool connects to model providers you set up, any model costs come from those providers rather than from Continue; the pages read do not list a Continue paid plan.
