WordPress
Free, open-source publishing software you install on your own hosting to build sites, blogs and stores.
Our verdict
What it does well
- The software is free and released under GPLv2 or later
- Plugin library adds stores, analytics, newsletters and more
- You choose your own host and keep control of your site
Where it falls short
- You need hosting and a domain, which cost extra
- You set up, update and back up the site yourself or via your host
- Needs PHP and MySQL or MariaDB on the server

WordPress (wordpress.org) is open-source publishing software. You build pages with the Block Editor, start from a theme or a blank canvas, and add features such as stores, analytics and newsletters through plugins.
The software itself costs nothing and is released under the GPL (GPLv2 or later). You do need hosting to run it. wordpress.org lists recommended hosts (Pressable, Bluehost and Hostinger) but does not publish hosting prices, so hosting is a separate cost that depends on the provider you pick.
WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater and MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.11 or greater. Most hosts meet the minimum requirements. This entry covers the open-source software at wordpress.org, not the hosted service at wordpress.com.
