Our verdict

Slack suits teams that want a widely used chat tool with many integrations and are happy to pay per person once they outgrow the free plan's 90-day history. Skip it if you need to self-host or keep full message history for free.

What it does well

  • Free plan is free forever, with no time limit
  • Over 2,600 apps in its marketplace
  • Built-in huddles for video calls, plus Slack Connect with outside companies

Where it falls short

  • Free plan saves and searches only the last 90 days of messages
  • Free plan is limited to up to 10 apps and 1:1 external messaging
  • Priced per user, so cost grows with team size
