Jitsi Meet
Open source video conferencing you can use free with no account, or host on your own server.
Our verdict
What it does well
- Free to use with no account needed
- Apache-2.0 licensed, and you can run your own server
- Includes screen sharing, chat, polls, reactions and virtual backgrounds
Where it falls short
- Self-hosting means you deploy and operate the server yourself
- Official site names no desktop app, only web, iOS and Android
- No chat, phone or calendar suite like Zoom Workplace

Jitsi Meet is described on its site as a fully encrypted, 100% open source video conferencing solution. You invite people with a simple custom URL, share your desktop or presentations, chat, and edit documents together in Etherpad. No account is needed.
The software is free: the Jitsi site says you can use it all day, every day, for free, and offers a demo at meet.jit.si. The source code is on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license, so you can also run your own instance. Jitsi lists web browsers, Android (Google Play and F-Droid) and iOS, and offers web and native SDKs for developers. The Jitsi handbook also lists JaaS (Jitsi as a Service) as a hosted option; its pricing was not checked.
