Our verdict
What it does well
- Free plan with unlimited private channels
- Data is encrypted on your device and the vault works offline
- Apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android
Where it falls short
- Free plan has 100 MB of remote storage and 10 shared channels
- Source code is under a source-available licence, not an open-source one
- No browser version; it runs as a desktop or mobile app

Anytype is made by Any, a Swiss association. Its site describes a vault that lives on your device, with local encryption where only you hold the keys, offline use, and peer-to-peer sync on local networks. You build with a block-based editor, databases, templates and widgets, and can view objects as table, kanban, gallery or graph.
Pricing is by membership. The Free plan includes 100 MB of remote storage, 10 shared channels and unlimited private channels. Plus is $4 per month (1 GB, unlimited shared channels), Pro is $8 per month (10 GB) and Ultra is $16 per month (100 GB). The pricing page has a Monthly/Yearly toggle with yearly marked -20%, and the paid plans also include a custom ANY ID. Educators and students can get a 50% discount, and Anytype for Business (SSO, admin panel, self-hosting) is described separately.
The desktop client's code is public on GitHub under the Any Source Available License 1.0. That licence allows use, modification and redistribution only for non-commercial use, or for commercial use on networks Any Association has approved, so it is not an OSI open-source licence. You can self-host your own network, and the FAQ says no membership is required for that.
