Our verdict

Zammad fits teams that want an open-source help desk, either self-hosted for free or hosted in German data centers at a lower per-agent price than Zendesk. Skip it if you want a huge app marketplace or a vendor-run system without any server work.

What it does well

  • AGPL-3.0 software that is free to download and run on your own servers
  • Hosted plans start at €7 per agent per month, with a 30-day trial
  • Documents a REST API covering what the interface can do

Where it falls short

  • Self-hosting means you handle updates, backups and availability
  • Starter v2 is limited to 5 agents and email, web form and SMS channels
  • Hosted AI features cost an extra €0.03 per AI call
