Proton VPN
A Swiss VPN service with a free plan, paid plans, and open-source apps on desktop and mobile.
Our verdict
What it does well
- Free plan with no data limit, per Proton's pricing page
- Apps are published under GPL-3.0 in Proton's GitHub repos
- Plus plan covers 10 devices at a time
Where it falls short
- Free plan: 1 device, medium speed, servers in 10 randomly selected countries
- Pricing page shows only 24-month prices for the paid plans
- Unlimited bundle costs more because it includes other Proton products

Proton VPN is made by Proton, which says it is based in Switzerland. It has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone/iPad, browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox, and apps for Android TV, Apple TV and Fire Stick.
Proton says it enforces a strict no-logs policy and that it does not store, collect or track information about connection logs, IP addresses, session lengths or location. Proton's blog says Securitum, which it calls a leading European security auditing company, has audited its VPN infrastructure for five years running; Proton quotes the 2026 report as saying the examined servers did not indicate logging of users' browsing activity. These are Proton's statements; we have not verified them independently.
Pricing as shown in USD: Proton Free is $0.00 (1 device, medium speed, 10 countries chosen at random; Proton says no data limits). VPN Plus is $3.49 per month on a 24-month term ($83.76 for the first 24 months, then $83.88 every 12 months) and secures 10 devices at a time. Proton Unlimited is $7.99 per month on a 24-month term ($191.76 for the first 24 months, then $119.88 every 12 months) and bundles other Proton services. Both paid plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee.
