PhotoPrism
Self-hosted photo app that organizes, tags and searches photos and videos, with optional paid memberships.
Our verdict
What it does well
- Free Community Edition with unlimited storage and instances
- Handles RAW and video files, plus Live Photos, auto labels and face recognition
- Works in a browser as an installable PWA and over WebDAV
Where it falls short
- No official native mobile apps; uses the PWA and third-party apps such as PhotoSync
- Extra user roles, 3D and satellite maps and a user management UI need a paid membership
- Standard Docker images use the Plus License; only the Community Edition is AGPL

PhotoPrism is an AI-powered, privacy-first app for browsing, organizing and sharing photos and videos, self-hosted or in the cloud. It labels pictures by content and location, recognizes faces, plays Live Photos, includes world maps and can merge metadata from Exif, XMP and sources like Google Photos. Phones are backed up with compatible apps such as PhotoSync, and a PWA gives an app-like experience.
It installs with Docker on 64-bit AMD, Intel and ARM (including Raspberry Pi and Apple Silicon), and there are also Linux packages and FreeBSD guides. The Community Edition is free and open source under AGPL.
Paid memberships fund the project. Pricing page: Essentials at EUR 2.00 per month and Plus from EUR 6.00 per month, both for self-hosting, and hosted PikaPods instances from $6.50 per month. Prices are shown in euros, so no US starting price is given. PhotoPrism Pro is a separate offering for teams and organizations.
