Immich
Self-hosted photo and video backup and management app with mobile and web apps.
Our verdict
What it does well
- Automatic backup from phones, with search by metadata, objects, faces and CLIP
- Docs say all features are free forever, with nothing behind a paywall
- Multi-user support, shared albums, partner sharing, OAuth and an API
Where it falls short
- Needs Docker and at least 6GB RAM and 2 CPU cores
- Docs say it probably won't save you money once hardware and backups are counted
- Its own README warns you to keep a 3-2-1 backup of your photos

Immich is a self-hosted photo and video management solution. It has iOS and Android apps with background backup, and a web app. Features listed in its README include face recognition and clustering, search by metadata, objects, faces and CLIP, shared and partner albums, memories, a global map, RAW support and Live Photo/Motion Photo backup.
The server installs via Docker Compose (recommended), Kubernetes and community options for Unraid, TrueNAS, Synology and QNAP. The quick start asks for a system with at least 6GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores.
Immich is free. Its docs say you can also purchase Immich, for one user or a whole server, to support development, but that all features will be free forever and nothing will be put behind a paywall. The purchase price could not be confirmed. The code is licensed under AGPL-3.0.
