Our verdict

Suits people who already use Microsoft 365 and want AI in Word, Excel and Outlook alongside a chat assistant. Skip it if you want a standalone AI subscription priced separately from an office suite.

What it does well

  • Free with a signed-in Microsoft account
  • Apps for web, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android
  • Paid Copilot features sit inside Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, Pro

Where it falls short

  • No Copilot-only paid plan; extra usage requires a Microsoft 365 subscription
  • Copilot features on Family plans are for the subscription owner only
  • Free-tier limits are described only as 'usage limits', with no numbers
The Microsoft Copilot website
The official Microsoft Copilot website, 16 October 2026.

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant for chat, search and content creation, available on the web at copilot.com, as desktop apps for Windows and Mac, and as iOS and Android apps. Microsoft says it is free with a signed-in Microsoft account, with some capabilities subject to usage limits. Several features were renamed: Project is now Notebook, Tasks is now Cowork, Deep Research is now Researcher, and Study and Learn mode is now Guided Learning.

Paid access to higher Copilot usage is sold through Microsoft 365 plans for individuals. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 per month (higher usage than free for advanced chat, image creation and visual assistance, plus Copilot in desktop Office apps). Family costs $12.99 per month for up to 6 people, but Copilot AI features are for the subscription owner only. Premium costs $19.99 per month with extensive usage and limited agentic features such as Researcher and Analyst. Pro costs $99.99 per month, billed monthly only, with the highest usage limits. Yearly billing is also offered for Personal, Family and Premium.

Business customers are covered by separate Microsoft 365 Copilot plans, which were not compared here because this entry covers the consumer app.
