Our verdict

listmonk is for developers and technical teams who want to run newsletters on their own server without paying per subscriber. Skip it if you want a hosted, no-setup tool with drag-and-drop support and a vendor to call.

What it does well

  • Free software under the AGPL-3.0 licence, with no per-contact fees
  • Single binary or Docker install; managed lists of millions of subscribers
  • SQL-based segmentation, analytics and a transactional API

Where it falls short

  • You set up PostgreSQL and run the server yourself
  • Project site lists third-party hosts but not their prices
The listmonk website
The official listmonk website, 16 October 2026.

listmonk is a self-hosted newsletter, mailing list manager and transactional mail tool. It handles single and double opt-in lists, SQL-based segmentation, built-in analytics and Go-language templating, and uses multi-threaded, multi-SMTP email queues. A transactional API sends messages from pre-defined templates.

The software is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence. You install it from a single binary (64-bit builds for Linux, macOS, Windows, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD) or with Docker, point it at a PostgreSQL database, and open the dashboard in a browser on port 9000. The site lists third-party hosting providers but does not state their prices, so your costs are your own server and SMTP sending.
