Invoice Ninja
Invoicing, quotes, expenses and time tracking, with a free hosted plan and self-hostable source code.
Our verdict
What it does well
- Free forever plan with unlimited invoicing for up to 5 clients, no credit card
- You can self-host it; the README says Pro and Enterprise features are in the source
- Apps for iPhone, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux
Where it falls short
- Source-available under the Elastic License, which is not an open-source licence
- Free hosted plan is limited to 5 clients; unlimited clients needs Pro
- Self-hosting means you run, update and secure the server yourself

Invoice Ninja is invoicing software for freelancers and small businesses, running since 2014. It covers invoices and quotes with 11 templates, online payments (Stripe, PayPal, Square and GoCardless are listed), recurring invoices, expenses, time tracking and projects, and a client portal. Zapier, Make and Pabbly connect it to other apps.
On the hosted version, the Free plan is $0 with up to 5 clients and unlimited invoicing. Pro is $14/month billed monthly or $140/year with unlimited clients and invoices. Enterprise starts at $18/month for 1-2 users and scales with user count up to $300/month for 51-100 users. Premium Business is custom, from $280/year. Paid plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.
The code is on GitHub and the README calls it source-available and says it is released under the Elastic License. It can be self-hosted on a server or VM, with Docker, Cloudron, Softaculous, Elestio or YunoHost, and the README says all Pro and Enterprise features from the hosted app are in that code. A $40-per-year white-label licence removes Invoice Ninja branding from client-facing parts.
