Our verdict

Wave is for freelancers and very small businesses that want free invoicing and bookkeeping and accept to pay per card payment. Skip it if you want automatic bank feeds without paying, or a plan that bundles payroll.

What it does well

  • Starter plan is US$0 with unlimited invoices, estimates and bills
  • Accountant and tax pro access is free
  • Mobile app for iOS and Android for invoicing on the go

Where it falls short

  • Starter has no bank auto-import; that needs the US$19/month Pro plan
  • Online payment fees: 2.9% + US$0.60 per card payment on Starter
  • Payroll, receipts and Advisors are separate paid add-ons
The Wave website
The official Wave website, 16 October 2026.

Wave is browser-based small business software that combines accounting, invoicing, payments, payroll and receipt scanning. It also has a mobile app on iOS and Android. The site says it is aimed at small business owners rather than accountants.

The Starter plan is US$0 and includes unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping records. Pro is US$19 per month (US$190 per year) and adds bank auto-import, automatic categorization, unlimited receipt capture, late-payment reminders and user roles. Pro is also priced in Canadian dollars on the page.

Online payments are optional and charged per transaction: 2.9% + US$0.60 per card payment on Starter, and 2.9% + US$0 for the first 10 card payments a month on Pro, then 2.9% + US$0.60. Payroll, receipts and Wave Advisors (bookkeeping done for you) are paid add-ons.
