Our verdict

Good for home labs and small to mid-size teams who want a full hypervisor they can run on their own hardware, with optional paid support. Skip it if you want a hosted service or do not want to manage servers.

What it does well

  • KVM virtual machines and LXC containers managed from one web interface
  • Clustering, high availability, live migration and software-defined storage (Ceph, ZFS)
  • Source is AGPL-3+; the free no-subscription repository needs no key

Where it falls short

  • Paid support is priced per physical CPU socket per year, in EUR
  • Wiki advises against the no-subscription repository for production
  • Aimed at server hardware; Raspberry Pi-style boards are not supported
The Proxmox VE website
The official Proxmox VE website, 17 October 2026.

Proxmox VE is described by its maker as a complete, open-source server management platform for enterprise virtualisation. It combines the KVM hypervisor and Linux Containers (LXC) with software-defined storage and networking and a web-based interface. The overview page also mentions high availability clustering, live migration and integrated disaster recovery tools.

The software itself is not sold: the source package's copyright file lists AGPL-3+, and the Proxmox wiki says the pve-no-subscription repository needs no key, though it is not recommended for production. Paid subscriptions give access to the Enterprise repository and support. They are priced per occupied physical CPU socket per year in EUR, net of VAT: Community EUR 120 (public forum only, intended for non-production use), Basic EUR 370, Standard EUR 550 and Premium EUR 1,100.

The System Requirements page lists a 64-bit x86 or ARM CPU with virtualisation support, at least 1 GB RAM for evaluation (2 GB plus guest memory recommended for production), and current Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Edge for the web interface.
