n8n

Visual workflow automation tool for connecting apps and building AI agents; self-host it free or pay for the cloud version.

Our verdict

n8n suits technical teams that want to automate app-to-app work and AI agent flows, with the option to self-host everything. Skip it if you want a zero-learning-curve builder or need OSI open-source licensing.

What it does well

  • More than 500 native integrations, plus any API via HTTP
  • Free Community Edition you can self-host with Docker
  • Unlimited steps per workflow on every plan

Where it falls short

  • Source-available under the Sustainable Use License, not an OSI open-source licence
  • Cloud plans are metered per workflow execution (2,500 a month on Starter)
  • No permanent free cloud plan, only a trial
The n8n website
The official n8n website, 2 November 2026.

n8n is a workflow automation platform. You connect apps and services in a visual editor — it lists more than 500 native integrations, and you can call any API over HTTP or plug in AI agents. Workflows can be inspected step by step, which makes them easier to explain and debug.

You can run n8n two ways: as a hosted cloud service, or self-hosted with Docker on your own hardware. The self-hosted Community Edition is free. Cloud plans start at €20 per month billed annually on the Starter plan, which includes 2,500 workflow executions with unlimited steps per workflow; the Pro plan is €50 per month billed annually with 10,000 executions.

The catches: n8n is source-available under its own Sustainable Use License, so it is not open source in the OSI sense, and its licence terms restrict offering it as a service. Building workflows also takes more learning than simpler point-and-click automation tools.
