Our verdict

Matomo fits site owners and organisations that want Google Analytics-style reports with data kept on their own server or in an EU-hosted cloud. Skip it if you want a free hosted service or would rather not maintain a server.

What it does well

  • Self-hosted Community edition is free forever, with unlimited users and hits
  • GPL-3.0 code on GitHub; you keep ownership of your data
  • Offers cookieless tracking, anonymisation and unsampled data

Where it falls short

  • Matomo Cloud has no free plan, only a free trial
  • Community edition support is forum only
  • Self-hosting means running your own server, updates and backups
The Matomo website
The official Matomo website, 16 October 2026.

Matomo calls itself a privacy-first, open-source web analytics platform. It lists JavaScript and log analytics, event and conversion tracking, funnels, segmentation, A/B testing, heatmaps and session recordings, and can be hosted in Matomo Cloud or self-hosted on-premise.

Pricing has two tracks. Matomo Cloud is priced by monthly hits, from US$26 per month for 50,000 hits (EUR 22), excluding tax, up to custom pricing above 10 million hits; the page offers a free trial with no credit card. On-Premise has a free Community tier (unlimited users and hits, forum support) and paid bundles from 275 EUR (Team), 1,450 EUR (Business) and 3,400 EUR (Enterprise), excluding tax.

Matomo's code is on GitHub under GPL v3 or later. The README says commercial offerings are the hosted Cloud service, paid support plans and consulting.
