Kopia

Open-source backup tool with encryption, compression and deduplication for laptops and servers.

Our verdict

Kopia suits people who are comfortable with a technical tool and want encrypted, deduplicated backups going to storage they control. Skip it if you want a simple set-and-forget consumer backup service or phone backup.

What it does well

  • Backups are encrypted, compressed and deduplicated automatically
  • Sends backups to cloud storage of your choosing, or your own destinations
  • Available as a desktop app (KopiaUI) or a command-line tool, for laptops up to servers

Where it falls short

  • No storage of its own included — you connect a destination yourself
  • More technical than consumer backup services
  • No mobile apps
The Kopia website
The official Kopia website, 2 November 2026.

Kopia is open-source backup software. It takes snapshots of your files, encrypts, compresses and deduplicates them, and stores them in the cloud storage you pick — from small laptops up to large servers. You can run it through a graphical desktop app, KopiaUI, or through its command-line interface, and snapshots are managed with policies for scheduling and retention.

It is free and open source under Apache-2.0, with downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux. There is no paid plan and no hosted service on the project's site.

The catches: Kopia does not include storage — you connect your own destination — and while the desktop app is friendly, its dedup-and-snapshot model is more technical than all-in-one consumer backup products.
