Our verdict

Joplin is for people who want an open source notes app they can keep control of, with Markdown and encryption, on Windows, macOS or Linux. Skip it if you want built-in calendar and task features or AI tools like those Evernote lists.

What it does well

  • Open source under AGPL-3.0-or-later
  • End-to-end encryption so only you can read your notes
  • Sync with Joplin Cloud, Dropbox or OneDrive

Where it falls short

  • Joplin Cloud sync is a paid option, from 2.99€ per month
  • Web clipper is listed for Chrome and Firefox only
  • Joplin Web App is listed only with Joplin Cloud plans
The Joplin website
The official Joplin website, 16 October 2026.

Joplin is an open source note-taking app. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus a terminal app. You can write in a Rich Text or Markdown editor, attach images, video, PDFs and audio, and add math expressions, diagrams and plugins. A web clipper is available for Chrome and Firefox.

Notes can be encrypted end to end and synced through Joplin Cloud, Dropbox or OneDrive. The code in the repository is licensed under AGPL-3.0-or-later, except directories that carry their own licence file; the packages/server directory has a separate Joplin Server Personal Use License.

Joplin's site does not state a price for the apps themselves; it describes subscriptions as a way to support the project. Joplin Cloud plans are priced in euros: Basic 2.99€ per month (2.40€ per month billed yearly), Pro 5.99€ per month, Pro 100 GB 9.99€ per month, and Teams 7.99€ per user per month (minimum 2 users). Joplin Server Business is self-hosted at 40.00€, 35.00€ or 30.00€ per user per year depending on size.
