Our verdict

GIMP is for people who want a capable image editor at no cost and don't mind learning it. Skip it if your work depends on Adobe's own tools and file workflows.

What it does well

  • Free software, source code under the GNU GPL v3
  • Runs on Windows, macOS and Linux
  • Supports plug-ins and scripting in Python and Scheme

Where it falls short

  • The GIMP team does not provide a Mac App Store package
  • The Linux AppImage requires Debian 13 or newer

GIMP's site calls it 'The Free & Open Source Image Editor'. It is a cross-platform editor for photo manipulation, artwork, graphic design and scripted image processing, with plug-ins and scripting in Python and Scheme.

GIMP is free software; the site states no price and has a donation page. The project's source repository carries the GNU GPL version 3 licence text.
