Our verdict

A good fit if you want a browser from a nonprofit-backed project with a free software licence and built-in tracker blocking. Skip it if you rely on Google-specific features such as Gemini in Chrome.

What it does well

  • Licensed under MPL 2, which Mozilla calls a free software licence
  • Blocks fingerprinting and ad trackers; Mozilla cites 2,000+ trackers blocked
  • Works on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS

Where it falls short

  • Needs Windows 10+ or macOS 10.15+ for current versions; older systems get ESR
  • Linux builds need specific libraries such as GTK+ 3.14+ and glibc 2.17+
The Firefox website
The official Firefox website, 16 October 2026.

Firefox is a web browser from Mozilla. Mozilla's download page lists Fingerprint Blocking, Ad Tracker Blocking, Private Browsing Mode and a free password manager, and says Firefox automatically blocks more than 2,000 online trackers.

Firefox is available for Windows, macOS and Linux on desktop, and for Android and iOS on mobile. Mozilla says Firefox is no longer supported on Windows 8.1 and below or macOS 10.14 and below, and points those users to Firefox ESR.

Mozilla states that its software, including Firefox, is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2, which it calls a free software license. The licence lets you run, study, share and modify the software, and there is no separate end-user licence agreement.
