Our verdict

Calibre is for anyone who keeps a large ebook collection and wants conversion, metadata and device syncing for free. Skip it if you only read on one app and never need to convert or manage files.

What it does well

  • Completely free, with optional donations to support development
  • Converts dozens of file types and transfers books to devices
  • Built-in viewer, EPUB and Kindle editor, news download and web content server

Where it falls short

  • Official site does not state minimum Windows, macOS or Linux versions
  • No full desktop app for iOS or Android; the site only links mobile guides
  • Mobile use is only covered by guides linked from the download page

Calibre calls itself the one stop solution to all your e-book needs. Its README describes an e-book manager that can view, convert, edit and catalog books in major formats, work with e-reader devices, fetch metadata from the internet, and download newspapers and convert them into e-books.

The site says calibre can convert dozens of file types, transfer books to devices wirelessly or by cable, deliver news from hundreds of sources, and host your library through a built-in web server. Downloads are listed for Windows, macOS, Linux and a portable version.

It is free of charge. The site asks visitors to contribute through Patreon or PayPal, in USD or INR, to keep development going. The source code is on GitHub under GPL-3.0.
