Bruno

Open-source API client that stores requests as plain-text files you can keep in Git.

Our verdict

Bruno is for developers who want a fast API client that keeps collections in Git with no account needed. Skip it if your team wants turnkey cloud sync without touching Git, or you need a web-based client.

What it does well

  • Collections are stored as plain-text files in your repository, so they work with Git, diffs and code review
  • No account, login or forced cloud sync; data stays on your machine
  • Free and open source under MIT, for macOS, Windows and Linux, with a CLI

Where it falls short

  • No built-in cloud sync — teams share collections through Git or paid plans
  • Syncing with private Git providers requires the paid Pro plan
  • Desktop only; no web or mobile client

The official Bruno website, 2 November 2026.

Bruno is an open-source API client for exploring and testing APIs — an offline, local-first alternative to Postman and Insomnia. Collections are saved as plain-text files (the .bru OpenCollection format) in your file tree or repository, so you can branch, diff, review and merge them like code, and use them from your IDE, the terminal and AI agents.

The desktop app is free and MIT-licensed for macOS, Windows and Linux, with a CLI as well. Paid plans add team features: Pro is $6 per user per month billed annually (private Git providers, unlimited workspaces, advanced Git features), and Ultimate is $11 per user per month billed annually (secret-manager integration, SSO, SCIM and audit logs). A 14-day Ultimate trial needs no credit card.

The catch is deliberate: there is no cloud sync and no account system in the free app, so sharing collections across a team means using Git — or paying for a plan.
