Our verdict

Good for people who want a Chromium-based browser that blocks ads and trackers out of the box. Skip it if you rely on Google account integration or dislike built-in extras like Rewards and AI.

What it does well

  • Shields block third-party ads and trackers by default
  • Free to use; Brave Rewards is optional
  • Open source under MPL-2.0 (brave-core); runs on desktop and mobile

Where it falls short

  • VPN and Brave Talk Premium are paid subscriptions
  • Brave Origin, a paid version with some features removed, costs $59.99 one-time
  • Browser AI, Rewards and Brave Search are built into the pitch, not just the blocker
The Brave website
The official Brave website, 16 October 2026.

Brave is a web browser whose homepage says it blocks third-party ads on every website and offers Shields against tracking and fingerprinting. Brave Search is the default for many new users. The site lists a browser AI feature, an optional Rewards program where you can view ads and earn BAT, and a separate Firewall + VPN subscription.

Brave says the browser is completely free to use. Paid extras include the VPN, Brave Talk Premium and Brave Origin, a paid version without some features, sold as a one-time purchase of $59.99.

It runs on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows. The brave-core repository, which customizes Chromium to make the browser, is licensed MPL-2.0.
