Our verdict

Suited to professional and student designers who need Adobe's vector tools and work with Adobe formats and Creative Cloud. Skip it if you only draw occasional logos or diagrams and do not want a yearly subscription.

What it does well

  • Runs on Windows, macOS and iPad
  • 7-day free trial before you pay

Where it falls short

  • Subscription only, with an annual commitment billed monthly
  • No free plan, only a 7-day trial
  • Bigger Creative Cloud Pro bundle costs US$69.99/mo at the regular price

Illustrator is Adobe's vector graphics app. Vector art is built from points, lines and curves rather than pixels, so it can be resized without losing quality. Adobe lists features such as snapping tools, Concept to Vector, Generative Shape Fill, Turntable and Generative Expand.

It is sold by subscription only. The Illustrator plan for individuals is US$22.99/mo on an annual plan billed monthly. Creative Cloud Pro is listed at a regular US$69.99/mo, or US$34.99/mo as an alternative offer, and a student and teacher price of US$19.99/mo is shown. Business plans start at US$37.99/mo per license.

Adobe offers a 7-day free trial for individual plans and 14 days for business plans. The free trial works on macOS, Windows and iPad.
